Area Code 762 - Athens, Georgia

Where Is Area Code 762?

Area code 762 serves much of northern and western Georgia, as well as the area around Augusta in eastern Georgia. Athens is its primary city. The code shares its geographic service area with area code 706, so the two codes cover the same places rather than separate neighboring regions. Their shared footprint crosses several counties, and area-code boundaries do not always match county lines.

Major cities in the shared area include Athens, Augusta, Columbus, Dalton, and Rome, along with smaller communities across northeast, northwest, and west-central Georgia. Augusta sits beside the Savannah River near Georgia’s eastern border, and Columbus lies along the Chattahoochee River in west-central Georgia. History of Area Code 762

Area code 706 entered service in 1992 after a geographic split from 404. The change created a separate numbering area for communities across northern and western Georgia, including Athens and Columbus. In 1995, area code 770 split from 404 to serve many Atlanta suburbs, reflecting the growth of Georgia’s phone system.

Area code 762 entered service in 2006 as an overlay to 706. An overlay adds a second area code across the same geographic region instead of dividing the region into separate areas. Existing customers kept their 706 numbers, while new numbers could use 762. The overlay required ten-digit dialing for local calls in the shared area.

Got a missed call from 762?

Our directory lists 762 for Athens, Georgia, but an area code alone cannot establish who is calling. Scammers can fake caller ID to match the first six digits of the number they are dialing, a trick called neighbor spoofing, so a familiar-looking code proves nothing about who is really calling.

If you were not expecting the call, let it go to voicemail. Verify the caller through a trusted contact method before returning the call, and never share personal details with an unverified caller.

Worth knowing: an area code no longer tells you where someone is. Mobile numbers keep their original code when people move, so a 762 number may belong to someone who left Georgia years ago.
