History of Area Code 360
Area code 360 entered service on January 15, 1995, after a geographic split from area code 206. Before the split, area code 206 served a much larger part of western Washington. The new code gave Bellingham and other communities outside the Seattle area a separate numbering area as demand for telephone numbers increased.
Area code 564 became an overlay for the 360 region on June 30, 2017. An overlay adds a second area code to the same geographic region, so 564 increased numbering capacity without changing the 360 boundary. The overlay also made ten-digit dialing necessary for local calls in the affected region.
